What better way to express affection to a member of the community than by bringing them a gift that literally warms their home? On Valentine’s Day, drivers from VL Tammaro – and owner Mike Tammaro himself – filled the tanks of eight households in Baileyville, Calais, and Princeton as part of the annual Maine Energy Marketer’s Association [MEMA] Fuel Your Love event. More than 1,000 gallons were delivered at no cost.

This is the fourth year that MEMA has coordinated the event among its 125 fuel providers across the state. Last year, Dead River participated, bringing fuel to the homes of several customers.

Each provider participating in Fuel Your Love chooses the customers to receive the free deliveries based on their own criteria. VL Tammaro delivered to retired nurses, an EMT, widows – all of them were long-time customers and those who have “done good in the community,” Tammaro said. “In some cases, they really needed the help. It’s toward the end of winter and people need extra help at this time of year.”

Tammaro was moved by the response that the recipients gave. “They had tears in their eyes,” he said, describing how some reacted.

The truck drivers themselves, Rosena Crossman and Andy Ramsdell, were thrilled to be a part of the event, Tammaro said. “It’s been exciting for the drivers. They love spreading good news.”

The drivers were decked out in bright red outfits to accompany the truck itself – which was similarly colored in an appropriate red hue thanks to a large banner provided by MEMA. The eye-catching scene was appropriately completed by Tammaro gifting each recipient with flowers.

This is VL Tammaro’s first year but, per its owner, it won’t be the last. “Next year, we’ll do other areas.”
